Infertility - a personal and professional journey

Episode 142: Infertility - a personal and professional journey

Dr. Molina Dayal, REI, speaks to the challenges and joys of caring for women struggling to get pregnant and how her own journey with infertility informed her practice

Show notes

In this episode of GynoCurious, host Dr. Amy Novatt talks with Dr. Molina Dayal, a reproductive endocrinologist and medical director of STL Fertility in St. Louis, Missouri, about infertility. They start by defining infertility and breaking its causes into roughly equal thirds: one third attributable to the woman, one third to the man, and one third unexplained or a combination of factors.

Dr. Dayal describes how she came to the field and shares her own fertility journey, including pregnancy losses, a stage four endometriosis diagnosis, and the adoption of her daughter.

From there, the two get practical, and personal, about what fertility care actually involves. Dr. Dayal explains how patients can decide between their general gynecologist and a specialist. She stresses that seeing a fertility specialist does not automatically mean IVF, because treatment begins with the least invasive options. They also discuss the psychological toll of infertility and the financial burden of treatment, which can vary tenfold depending on location and insurance. The episode covers egg freezing in detail. A woman’s egg quality declines with age but her uterus does not, which makes fertility preservation a strong option for those who are delaying childbearing.
